The Indian Museum is the earliest and largest museum in the Asia-Pacific region. It was originally conceived of by the members of the Asiatic Society as far back as 1796, as a repository for artefacts and as a centre for the dissemination of knowledge. The idea was deliberated until 1814, when the foundation stone was finally laid. As well as its rare collections of antiques, armour, ornaments, fabrics and paintings, The Indian Museum houses vast numbers of fossils and examples of taxidermy, tremendous skeletons and mummies.
