This market street takes its name from the presence of many educational centres and areas of intellectual activity in the locale, including the iconic Indian Coffee House, where individuals engage in adda, a kind of freestyle debate about anything and everything from soccer to Tagore and Satyajit Ray; a style of social discourse which is unique to Kolkata. Also known as the ‘Colony of Books’, College Street is home to a large new and used book market that stretches almost the entire length (1.5 kilometres) of the street. Recent publications and out-of-print gems can be found here.
