Warm Up This Winter in Magnificent Mauritius

Published on: November 30, 2024

Where in the world?

Mauritius can be found south of the equator in the Indian Ocean, around 2,000 kilometres off the coast of East Africa. Compared to its closest neighbour, Madagascar, which is 800 kilometres away and measures 1,600 kilometres from north to south and 600 kilometres from east to west, Mauritius is tiny – just 60 kilometres long and 30 kilometres across. At the last count, the total population of Mauritius was 1.2 million.

Due to its colourful history of international slave, sugar, rum and spice trading, Mauritius has a rich ethnic diversity which adds flavour to its culinary, cultural and religious attractions. French, English and Hindi are among the many languages widely spoken on Mauritius.

Because it lies south of the equator, Mauritius experiences summer from November to April. During these months, temperatures range between 18 and 34 degrees Celsius. Meaning that for those of us who live in the northern hemisphere, our winter is the perfect time to escape to Mauritius for some sunshine.

Mauritius’ Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport offers frequent and regular flights between major Indian cities, the UK, Europe and the USA. Visitors from these areas can also stay for up to 90 days without a visa, provided you can show proof of financial sufficiency (minimum $100 USD per day), a hotel reservation and return or onward flight details.

The best time to visit Mauritius for scuba diving is between October and January, when the waters are warm and clear. You can expect to see unspoilt coral reefs teeming with turtles, colourful parrot fish, angel fish, shrimp, catfish, octopus and much more.

If you are keen to go scuba diving, the concierge at The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius would be happy to book you onto a PADI dive course at the nearby centre. Turtle Bay, upon whose shores our resort sits, offers an unrivalled range of dives for new and experienced divers. These include dive safaris, night dives, open water dives and underwater photography trips to tunnels, caves and shipwrecks.

Parasailing is the sport of flying high in the air securely harnessed to a parachute attached to the back of a moving motorboat. From up high, you will see the beautiful shoreline, palm trees and golden sands of Mauritius, and may even be lucky enough to spot dolphins frolicking in the sea. November to April is the best time to visit Mauritius for parasailing. The warm air currents result in a smooth, warm ride for the passenger.

The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius offers private parasailing experiences from our onsite boat house.

Just twenty minutes by car from our luxury resort, Mauritius’ capital city of Port Louis is a must-visit during any stay. During the day, it invites you to explore its cacophony of architectural styles. From bustling undercover markets and imposing British-style museums to a Chinese Pagoda, Tamil Temple, Christian Cathedral and Islamic Mosque. As night falls, the city’s ambience becomes electric with night markets and live entertainment that spills into exciting beach parties.

Because the best weather in Mauritius falls between the months of November to April, this is also the best time to experience candlelit dining on the island’s tropical seashore. Visitors can take their pick of fresh daily catches and Mauritius’ wide range of ‘local’ foods with eclectic international flavours. All served at a table on the warm sand, as the sun goes down over the ocean.

Champagne at sunset may set a mood that inspires you to pop the question. The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius also caters for destination weddings in Mauritius on its private beach. Please contact us for further information.

With regular international flight connections, simple visa requirements and warm winter sun, the best time to visit Mauritius is now.
