Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, or the Prince of Wales Museum, is a fantastic museum of art and history located in a Grade I Mumbai heritage building around 2 kilometres from our 5 star hotel in Mumbai. It houses a collection of more than 60,000 artefacts dating back to the Indus Valley Civilisation, as well as armour and weaponry from different eras. The natural history section includes mammals, reptiles, birds and fish. There are also some 2,000 examples of miniature paintings, as well as artworks made from jade, metal, wood and ivory.

Located in south Mumbai, within easy distance of The Oberoi, Mumbai, Jehangir Art Gallery has garnered a reputation for nurturing contemporary Indian artists. Sir Cowasji Jehangir (1879-1962) was a Second Baronet and leading industrialist, as well as a great patron of the arts. He founded this gallery in 1952 and since doing so, it has hosted countless exhibitions by painters, photographers, sculptors, weavers and more. The gallery also holds workshops, lectures and interactive seminars. One of the best places to visit in Mumbai should you be interested in the artistic history of Mumbai.

Dominating the landscape of Mumbai University, Rajabhai Clock Tower stands at 25 storeys or 85 metres high. With architecture inspired by the Victorian Art Deco movement, it was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. The clock tower was designed by the British architect Sir Goerge Gilbert Scott to resemble London’s Big Ben clock tower and was funded by a Mumbai-based cotton trader called Premchand Roychand to remind his mother, Rajabai, to eat her meals on time. Rajabhai Clock Tower is one of the most iconic monuments in Mumbai.

Located in Churchgate, the High Court is one of the most noteworthy historical sites in Mumbai. One of the oldest courts in all of India, the building was completed in 1862 and its first sitting is dated 1879. Like Rajabhai Clock Tower, its architecture, the work of General Fuller of the British Royal Engineers, is a Victorian Art Deco ensemble. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The central tower stands at 55 metres high and is adorned with the statues of Justice and Mercy.

This awe-inspiring Victorian Gothic building was constructed during British rule and exudes the ambience of a traditional English university campus. The imposing Rajabhai Clock Tower should not and indeed cannot be missed. The university library is another must-see on your Mumbai tour.

Otherwise known an Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus, this perfectly preserved building harmonises traditional Mughal and Victorian Italianate Gothic architectural styles. It was opened with much pomp and fanfare in 1887 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the British Monarch: Queen Victoria, after whom it is named. Victoria Terminus is still used as the headquarters of India’s central railways and is one of the best places to visit in Mumbai to soak up the lively ambience of the city.
