A sacred island paradise with sandy beaches, warm, azure sea waters and ancient temples, Bali is a treasure trove waiting to be explored. Here are five of our top recommendations for places to visit in Bali:
The name Uluwatu is derived from two Balinese words: /ulu/ meaning rock or stone and /watu/ meaning top or tip. Located 251 metres above sea level, on the southern tip of the island of Bali, the 10th century temple of Uluwatu certainly is a breathtaking sight to behold, perched high on its promontory overlooking the Indian Ocean. The temple grounds are inhabited by monkeys and visitors are advised to keep all belongings secure upon their person. The dress code for visitors to Uluwatu is also strict; shoulders and knees must be covered and shoes may need to be removed before entering areas of the temple complex. Sarongs can be purchased or hired at the entrance, should you need them.
Uluwatu temple hosts kecak fire dance performances every evening at 6:00 p.m. Against a backdrop of the sun setting over the ocean, this is a wonderful sight to behold. World class surfers frequent the breakpoint below, which ranks #4 in the world for surfing. We recommend Uluwatu as one of the best places to visit in Bali....
Recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Tega Lalang is a series of cascading rice terraces just 15 minutes from Ubud in northern Bali. Their lush green surrounds, sprouting crops and mirror-like flooded surfaces inspire many a selfie. From December to February, the rice fields are more flooded due to the rains and the walk to and around them, although worthwhile, can be tricky. Around March and again from August to September, they are lush and green. The air is balmy. The sound of crickets and frogs complete nature’s symphony.
Located near the rice paddies, a set of giant swings that launch you over the mountainside are probably one of the best things to do in Bali. Magnificent views over the fields and forests, a rush of adrenaline and opportunities for photo memories are just three good reasons to try them. ...
Reached by boat on a journey of around 30 minutes from the south of Bali, Nusa Penida is a small island with less tourists and a more laid back vibe than its larger neighbour. The island has a number of beautiful beaches and temples waiting to be explored.
Kelingking beach is a popular spot due to its calm, turquoise waters, white sand beaches and interesting rock formations that look like a T-Rex. Visited by sun worshippers and photographers alike, it is one of the best places to visit in Bali.
Crystal Bay has excellent scuba diving. Known as one of the few places in the world where you can see Giant Sunfish, Crystal Bay also boasts beautiful coral reefs teeming with parrot fish, clown fish and even stingrays. A small island in the middle of the bay is home to an ancient temple....
A sunrise trek over the volcanic landscape of Mount Batur is one of the most memorable things to do in Bali and maybe even a lifetime. The trek takes around 3 hours to the summit and although it isn’t steep, the terrain is rocky – Mount Batur is an active volcano – and you would be well-advised to wear sensible shoes and engage a professional guide.
Mount Batur last erupted in the year 2000 and is notable for its situation between two crater-like depressions formed by volcanic collapse. Views from the top encompass the lush green forests and rice fields of Bali. Mount Batur is approximately 90 minutes’ drive from Ubud in northern Bali....
Ubud’s monkey forest is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Bali. Under a dense canopy of trees, an ancient pathway adorned with sacred carvings leads through the forest to a Balinese Hindu temple where the established community of around 1,200 macaque monkeys assert their domain. Revered in Balinese culture as a link between the earthly and divine, these monkeys are not shy to steal sunglasses, cameras and food, so hold on tight to your personal belongings and please leave all food and drink behind.
Visitors can also expect to see traditional Balinese dance, the presentation of daily offerings and even public cremations at Ubud’s Sacred Monkey Forest.
