Visas

International visitors from the UK, Europe and the USA are either exempt from needing a visa or eligible for a visa upon arrival, free of charge, for up to 30 days.

Passports should be valid for at least six months from the date of entry.

Currency

The unit of currency in Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). Visit for up to date information on Current Exchange Rates .

British pounds, US dollars and Euros are widely accepted forms of payment, although change will most likely be returned in Egyptian pounds.

Most banks will not cash traveller’s cheques. We would be happy to help with foreign currency exchange in Egypt. Please ask the concierge upon arrival.

There are many international ATMs in Egypt. International credit cards are also accepted.

Recommended clothing.

We recommend you wear loose clothing that covers the shoulders and knees and is made from natural fabrics that will be comfortable in the hot weather. It is advisable to carry a hat at all times.

Language.

Arabic and English are widely spoken. French, German and Russian are also spoken in the major tourist areas.

Customs allowances.
Currency

Visitors are permitted to carry bank notes up to EGP 5,000 or less than USD 10,000 without making a customs declaration. Values exceeding this must be declared to customs and may be subject to import duty.

Duty free allowances per person (over the age of 18) are as follows:

  • Alcohol: 2 litres
  • Cigarettes: 200 pieces
  • Cigars: 25 pieces
  • Tobacco: 200g

Personal items to the value of EGP 1,500.

Gold over the value of EGP 500,000 must be declared to customs.

Restricted items
The following items are prohibited in Egypt:

  • Beef and poultry products;
  • Drugs;
  • Firearms;
  • Cotton.

Egypt has a zero tolerance drugs policy. Please contact your nearest Egyptian embassy or consulate for advice if you need to bring medications or other drugs into the country.
