Ranthambhore National Park was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1957 and in 1974 it gained the protection of the Government of India’s Project Tiger conservation programme. Since then, the numbers of resident tigers have been increasing thanks to dedicated conservation efforts in the area.
Ranthambhore National Park is also home to Ranthambhore Fort: a vast UNESCO World Heritage Site that overlooks the park and dates back one thousand years.

Located within Ranthambhore National Park and Tiger Reserve, Ranthambhore Fort dates back to the 10th century CE. As the park was formerly the hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur, the fort was built by them as a hunting lodge and commands a princely position with unrivalled views from its perch, 700 metres above the surrounding forests. One of India’s oldest temples to Lord Ganesha can also be found within the fort. Visited by pilgrims from around the world, this temple was constructed in the 13th century CE. Mesmerising ‘aarti’ prayers by fire are conducted here daily. Note: A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Ranthambhore School of Arts displays a range of artworks, including soot paintings of Ranthambhore’s tigers, by the celebrated artist Mr. M. D. Parashar. Visitors may be lucky enough to meet Mr. Parashar, a founding member and teacher at the school, either at the school or at The Oberoi Vanyavilas, where Mr. Parashar displays his soot paintings thrice weekly.
Dastakar is a responsible organisation that works with women from villages situated on the outskirts of Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve; helping them to secure sustainable livelihoods through the production of handicrafts with tiger motifs, trees, birds and animal imagery.
A branch of Tiger Watch NGO that provides craft training and employment opportunities for ex-poachers’ families, Moghiya tribal communities and villagers living around Ranthambhore National Park and Tiger Reserve. Dhonk Craft products include clothing and accessories for men, women and children.
