Haji Ali Dargah can be found 450 metres out at sea and is only reachable at low tide, when the receding waters reveal a narrow walkway from the mainland to the shrine. Legend has it that the revered Haji Ali travelled to India and settled in Mumbai, preaching the word of Islam. He instructed his followers that upon his death, they should drop his shroud into the ocean for it to be buried wherever it landed His corpse came to rest on a small cluster of rocks off the coast of Mumbai, and Haji Ali’s tomb was built here. The mausoleum is a fine example of Indo-Islamic architecture.
